Dental implant

There can be several reasons why a need for dental implants arises. A dental implant replaces one or more teeth, depending on what is needed. For many, the thought of an artificial tooth may seem overwhelming, but don't worry. A dental implant is in no way visible.

What are dental implants?

The dental implant itself is a screw-shaped artificial tooth root that is implanted in the jawbone. It therefore functions exactly like your original tooth root, which for good reason no longer works. Afterwards, a dental crown made specifically for the rest of your dentition is attached so that it blends in naturally.

What is it made of?

The tooth root is made from the light and relatively soft metal: titanium. As titanium is an element, it is extremely tissue-friendly and will not rust. Your body will therefore accept it as a natural object. In this way, the implant will "fuse" with the jawbone and stay in place. There is also no risk of any allergic reactions as it is a natural material.

When do you need a dental implant?

There can be several reasons why the need for one or more dental implants arises. The most common reasons are circumstances such as old age, accidents or illness. What they all have in common, however, is that a new implant gives patients a much higher quality of life than they had before treatment.

If you're missing a tooth or have a tooth that stands out, it can take a toll on your psyche. In some cases, a tooth is so badly damaged that it needs to be pulled out. Other times, a tooth has been subjected to a very hard blow, resulting in discoloration that can't be properly corrected.

In addition to the cosmetic benefits, it will also benefit the condition of the rest of your teeth. If you're missing a tooth, you risk your jaw contracting as there is no tooth to hold it in place.

How do you replace multiple teeth?

If several or all teeth in a jaw are missing, implants can serve as the base for a dental bridge or a full bridge. The dental crowns will be attached to each other, making it possible to attach up to several dental crowns to the same implant.

Implants can hold a prosthesis in place

Dental implants can also be used in conjunction with dentures.
If it's difficult to get a full denture to fit correctly, you can fit the existing denture with pressure locks and insert 2 implants for increased stability.

The prosthesis can then be "clicked" on and off as needed, for example when the prosthesis needs cleaning.

Benefits of dental implants

  • Acts like a natural tooth
  • Feels like a natural tooth
  • Looks a lot like your original tooth
  • The body takes it well
  • Strong quality that lasts for many years.

How does the treatment work?

Before we begin treatment, we will perform a thorough preliminary examination. We will take X-rays and carefully examine the condition of your teeth and jawbone. We will then assess what would be the best treatment for you.

The treatment will not hurt. It will be carried out under local anesthesia, so we make sure you are 100% pain-free.

If you have a phobia of the dentist, you can read advice for dental phobia here.

Here you can see the process of an implant treatment:

1. Feasibility study

Here we discuss your needs, wishes and options for your implant treatment. It is important that your expectations are aligned with the options available for dental implants.

For example, you may only want a cosmetically optimal solution or you may also need an improved chewing function.

The preliminary examination will also determine if there are any allergies (to local anesthesia or penicillin, for example), medication intake or diseases such as diabetes that may affect implant surgery.

Sometimes it is not possible to insert implants due to other diseases (certain diseases and medications can cause reduced healing ability, or reduced ability to stop bleeding), or very poor space conditions in the tooth row or jawbone.

For example, patients with untreated periodontal disease or other untreated inflammatory conditions in the jaws must be treated for these conditions before implant surgery can be performed.

During the preliminary examination, we also provide a price estimate for the treatment.

2. Full implant examination:

If you want to start implant treatment and are otherwise ready to have implants inserted, a full implant examination must then be performed.

Here we clarify the bone quality and quantity in the exact area where the implants will be inserted. For example, if there is reduced bone quantity (too little bone in height or width), it may be necessary to build up extra bone in the jaw before we can insert the dental implant.

A 3-D scan of the jaw is often necessary to give an accurate picture of the condition of the jaws.

In many cases, it is necessary to remove one or more bad teeth in the area where the dental implants will be inserted. Some temporary teeth may be needed during the healing period until the implant can be inserted.

During the full implant examination, we make a precise plan for the procedure itself. Here we will inform you thoroughly about how the surgery will proceed and what you should do before and after the procedure.

In many cases, you will need to start a course of antibiotics the night before surgery, and you will receive a prescription for this from us.

3. Operations:

On the day of surgery, we have prepared the clinic room for the operation.

You will be given local anesthesia and prepared for the surgery. After that, our experienced team will get ready and we will start the surgery.
The procedure itself takes between 45 min. to 2½ hours depending on the complexity of the procedure.

We finish with a control X-ray of the implant.
Afterwards, we will instruct you thoroughly on how to proceed in the following days.

Typically, you should refrain from sports, consume only cold and soft foods for the following two days and disinfect the operated area with the mouthwash chlorhexidine 0.1% twice daily for a week.

Most of our patients are surprised at how little pain they feel after surgery, and many only use mild painkillers for 1-2 days after the procedure.

We will call you the day after surgery to check that everything is as it should be.

The sutures (stitches) are removed approximately seven days after surgery.
It often takes 3 months before the implants are fully healed and ready for use. During this time, the implant is covered and protected by a gum former (healing abutment).

This works by protecting the implant itself and shaping the gums so that they are ready to receive the crown.

4. Impressions for implant crowns:

Three months after surgery, the implants are ready to receive the dental crowns that are attached on top of the implants.

Before they can be fabricated, impressions and color samples must be taken of the area in the row of teeth where the implant is placed.

Then, based on the impression, specially trained dental technicians will fabricate a dental crown and the abutment that connects the dental crown to the implant itself.
These parts match the exact color and shape of this area of the tooth row.

This process takes 1-2 weeks for our dental technician.

Sometimes it is necessary for our patients to visit our dental technician for individual coloring and customization of the implant crown, for example when it comes to dental crowns with extra high aesthetic requirements.

5. Cementing the implant crown:

Once the crown is ready from our dental technician, the patient comes in and the implant crown is attached.

All our patients are then instructed on how to clean and maintain the implant and dental crown. After this, the treatment is complete.

FAQ - Dental implants

Dental implants are a durable and long-lasting solution for replacing missing teeth. They can last for many years, often over 20 years, and in some cases even for life. The longevity of implants depends on several factors, such as individual oral hygiene, regular dental visits and general health. Proper care and maintenance of dental implants is essential to ensure their durability and success.

Cleaning a dental implant is important to ensure its durability and success. Follow these guidelines: Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft toothbrush, focusing on the area around the implant. Floss or use an interdental brush daily to clean the space between the implant and neighboring teeth. Visit the dentist regularly for professional cleaning and check the condition of the implant.

You can get a subsidy on dental implants if you are a member of Denmark and are in group 1, 2 or 5. The amount of subsidy you receive depends on which group you belong to and how long you have been a member of Denmark.
