Dental fillings

Most people will need one or more dental fillings at some point in their lives. A filling replaces the tooth substance that has disappeared due to a caries attack.

What is a dental filling?

The purpose of a dental filling is to replace missing tooth substance. When teeth are affected by tooth decay, it means that the enamel is slowly dissolving. Eventually, the solution will reach the dentin, which is commonly referred to as tooth decay. Once the cavity has occurred, the filling will act as the lost tooth substance.

When do you need dental fillings?

A dental filling becomes necessary when bacteria and acid have dissolved so much of the tooth that it has reached the dentin. Unfortunately, the size of the hole does not correlate with the degree of pain.

That's why it's important to always keep your appointments, as we can usually detect even the smallest cavities. This ensures that the cavity doesn't get bigger and you don't suddenly experience severe pain and toothache.

How are dental fillings performed?

When there is a hole in the tooth, you can compare it to an iceberg. Usually only the top can be seen with the naked eye. In reality, the hole is bigger if you go deeper into the tooth.

1. We remove the damaged tooth tissue

Before we can perform the filling, it is necessary to remove the damaged tooth tissue, which is filled with bacteria and shadows the hole itself. This is done by doing what many people associate with having a hole made in the tooth - drilling. A hole usually goes into the dentin, where the nerves are located. Therefore, the nerves will also be affected when we drill.

However, you don't have to worry about pain when you're in our hands. At Tandlægerne Glostrup, we can guarantee you 100% pain-free treatment.

If you suffer from dental anxiety, don't be afraid to share your concerns with us. We are all trained to deal with your fears.

2. The dead tooth tissue must be replaced

Once we have removed the damaged tooth tissue, the hole is exposed and cleaned. It is therefore necessary to cover the hole to prevent bacteria and food debris from entering. This is done by filling the hole with plastic material. Plastic is a soft material that is molded to the hole and then hardens. This way, it will act as a part of your tooth.

And REMEMBER... Most of the time, your teeth aren't as bad as you might imagine. Most problems can be solved with a single visit to us.

Plastic filling

Today, the vast majority of tooth decay can be repaired with the use of plastic. Plastic materials are now so good that they imitate natural tooth tissue to a very high degree. At the same time, they are strong and can be bonded securely to tooth enamel. For this reason, plastics are recommended for most cosmetic treatments such as: Reconstructing broken teeth, closing gaps and building uniform dental crowns. In severe cases where the plastic is not durable enough, we recommend the use of dental crowns.

Do I need a silver seal replacement?

For many years, the most commonly used form of dental filling was silver amalgam. Today, however, silver amalgam is no longer used as it has been found that over time the material expands every time it comes into contact with hot or cold food. This means that at some point, the tooth cannot withstand the pressure and breaks under even the slightest strain.

At Dentists in Glostrup, we recommend that most of our patients replace their old silver fillings with plastic fillings, which are much better for your teeth. In addition, the result is nicer to look at and you avoid heavy metals in your body.

3 good reasons to consider replacing old silver seals:

  • Securing the future of your teeth
  • You get a cosmetically nicer result
  • If you're pregnant, don't worry about heavy metals.

What does a dental filling cost?

The price of a dental filling depends on the tooth in question and the size of the hole. Because the size of the hole is not always visible to the naked eye, it is difficult to give a price before we have examined your teeth.

FAQ - Dental fillings

After a dental filling, it is recommended to wait to eat until the anesthesia has worn off, which usually takes 1-3 hours. This prevents accidental biting of the cheek, lip or tongue. If you have an amalgam filling, you should wait 24 hours before eating hard food. With composite fillings, you can eat as soon as the anesthesia wears off, but avoid chewing on the treated side.

The time it takes to make a filling depends on several factors, such as the complexity of the filling, the condition of the tooth and the method used. In general, a simple filling can take around 30 minutes to 1 hour. If the tooth is more damaged, has deeper cavities or requires additional preparation, the procedure may take longer.

A dental filling is used to repair minor damage to a tooth, such as cavities or small fractures. The filling material, such as amalgam or composite, is applied directly to the tooth to restore its shape and function. A dental crown, on the other hand, is a tooth-shaped "cap" placed over a damaged or weakened tooth that requires more extensive protection and strength. Crowns are made separately and then cemented into place over the existing tooth.
