If you need an emergency dentist in Copenhagen due to an accident or pain, you are welcome to contact us.

When do you need an emergency dentist?

Dental emergencies can be more or less urgent. Sometimes it can be reassuring to know when you need emergency treatment and when it's less urgent.

Causes of pain should not be ignored. Pain from teeth and gums is NOT normal. Something to act on immediately. Below you can read about acute and less acute painful conditions.

The common denominator is that you should see a dentist to find the cause and treat the pain. Read more about the different situations:

Typical reasons for needing an emergency dentist Copenhagen:

  • Tooth abscesses
  • Gingivitis
  • Serious tooth decay
  • Inflammation in the inner part of the tooth (nerve chamber)
  • Defective crown
  • Leaky filling
  • A lost tooth.

Why you may feel pain when you chew

There are many reasons why chewing hurts when you chew.

The most common ones are:

  • Root tip inflammation
  • Dentin fractures (cracks in teeth)
  • Too high filling or too high crowns
  • Loose teeth
  • Acute gingivitis/advanced periodontitis
  • Loose or lost dental crown.

If you experience pain when chewing, we recommend that you contact your dentist. However, this is not necessarily a situation that requires emergency treatment.

Accident

If you have knocked out all or part of your teeth in an accident, keep them in clean water or in your mouth if possible. This also applies to broken teeth that cause severe pain.

Toothache

Severe toothache is often caused by an infection in the nerve of the tooth. The pain is usually throbbing or pulsating and can come on completely unprovoked in the middle of the night or while sitting still. Painkillers such as Panodil/Pinex or Ipren/Ibuprofen can relieve the pain a little (remember to read the package leaflet for dosage, side effects and precautions).

Tooth abscesses

Tooth abscesses are most often caused by a root canal infection, where the inflammation has flared up and caused swelling near the tooth. Dental abscesses do not go away on their own and can be problematic depending on the location. Drainage should be created as much as possible to relieve the pressure and pain, and then the tooth may need root canal treatment.

Symptoms and signs of toothache that don't need emergency treatment

Most of us will experience toothache at some point. It can be extremely painful and, for many, unbearable. However, there are different situations that require an emergency appointment with the dentist

  • Pain when you eat. It's quite common that you may experience pain when chewing. This can be a sign of tooth decay, which is not necessarily acute.
  • Ice in your teeth if you eat something cold or sweet. Teeth icing is the most common type of pain we can experience in our teeth.

Painkillers for acute toothache

If you have a lot of pain, we recommend that you take panodil and Ipren, which can be bought over the counter in most places. However, it's always a good idea to call and consult with us so you can get the best possible pain relief until we can treat you.

Here you can read more about the recommendations for OTC medicines.

AND REMEMBER... The dumbest thing you can do is wait and see if it gets better. Teeth don't work like the rest of the body, which sometimes just needs a rest. The best thing you can do is contact an emergency dentist in Copenhagen and ask around.

FAQ - emergency dentist in Copenhagen

An emergency dentist is a dentist who offers quick treatment for dental emergencies and pain. Emergency dentists take care of problems that require immediate attention, such as toothache, broken or knocked out teeth, infections and other acute dental problems. They help relieve pain and prevent further damage until more thorough treatment can be performed.

You should contact an emergency dentist in the following situations: severe toothache, broken or knocked out teeth, loss of a filling or crown, infections or abscesses, bleeding from the gums or mouth, damage to teeth or gums from accidents, and bulging face or jaw. These cases require prompt treatment to avoid further complications and pain.

The treatment of acute toothache depends on the cause of the pain. Generally, painkillers, hot or cold compresses and antiseptic mouthwash can be used temporarily to relieve symptoms. But it's important to see a dentist as soon as possible to identify the cause of the toothache and get appropriate treatment, which may include teeth cleaning, fillings, tooth extraction or other treatments.

Yes, our emergency dentists are willing to treat new or non-registered patients experiencing a dental emergency. The aim of emergency dentistry is to provide fast and effective treatment to relieve pain and prevent further damage, whether you are an existing patient or not.
