What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental treatment that aims to whiten your teeth. Teeth whitening is done with the whitening agent hydrogen peroxide - commonly known as hydrogen peroxide.

The active ingredient is used to chemically whiten teeth by oxidizing the discoloration on the surface of the teeth - giving teeth a brighter and whiter appearance.

There are strict requirements for the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in teeth whitening products. Over-the-counter whitening products can therefore only contain 0.1% hydrogen peroxide - a concentration so low that the products have virtually no effect.
That's why we always recommend that you visit us at the clinic if you want to whiten your teeth. It helps to ensure a great result.

However, it's not just for cosmetic reasons that you shouldn't use home whitening products - but also for dental health reasons. Partly because some of the products on the market can be directly harmful to teeth, gums and mucous membranes - and partly because some teeth are not suitable for whitening for various reasons.

Get your smile back with teeth whitening

The smile is the shortest distance between two people. But the feeling of having yellowish or discolored teeth can make you less inclined to smile with your teeth - and that can affect your self-confidence.

However, discolored teeth are quite common. You can read more about the causes here. But even though it's natural, you can get your smile back - without any major hassle or financial outlay.

Professional teeth whitening is a relatively simple, quick and effective way to get your teeth white again. It is a cosmetic treatment that removes discoloration caused by food and lifestyle.

At Tandliv, we've helped many people regain their smile over the years - so we know how much of a difference it can make for each individual.

4 benefits of teeth whitening at the dentist:

  1. It's fast
  2. It's relatively easy
  3. It is relatively cheap
  4. It's gentle on your teeth.

Why do you get discolored teeth?

Discolored teeth can be caused by both internal causes and external influences. This is why we talk about internal and external discoloration.

Internal discolorations

Internal discoloration is the kind of discoloration that is caused by a defect in the interior of the tooth. This can be either a dead nerve, hereditary diseases or dental defects. If you have internal discoloration in your teeth, a regular course of teeth whitening will not be optimal.

If you book an appointment for a consultation, we will assess your teeth and then give you a quote for treatment.

External discolorations

External discoloration is the type of discoloration we most often bring on ourselves. Coffee, red wine and other colorful foods are all things that over time settle in our enamel and cause the yellowish color.

No matter why or to what extent you have external discoloration, we'll tailor your teeth whitening to give you a result that makes you want to smile.

Who can have teeth whitening performed?

Not all teeth are suitable for whitening, and plastic fillings and crowns do not change color as a result of the treatment. If you have fillings in your front teeth and other visible teeth, we may recommend replacing them during your teeth whitening treatment to ensure a uniform color on all your teeth.

Other reasons why you shouldn't whiten your teeth include:

  • That you are under the age of 18.
  • That you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • That your teeth are already so white that teeth whitening won't make a significant difference.
  • That you have acid damage.
  • That you have periodontal disease.
  • That your tooth enamel is so worn that whitening will have no effect.

For the same reason, we will always examine your teeth thoroughly to make sure they are 'fit'.

Before you choose to whiten your teeth, we will always examine them to make sure they are "suitable" for it. Teeth whitening for teeth that have acid damage - or you have periodontitis (gingivitis), we advise against whitening your teeth.

If you have plastic fillings on the teeth that are visible when you smile, be aware that you may need to replace the fillings after treatment as there may be a difference in shade. This is because the fillings are not bleached. We will address this before treatment if we think it is necessary to replace the fillings.

How does teeth whitening work?

The purpose of teeth whitening is to lighten teeth that have acquired a yellowish tinge over the years. Whitening is done using a tray and a special gel that we instruct you to use.

The tooth whitener we use in the clinic is called hydrogen peroxide and contains hydrogen peroxide. When the product is applied, a chemical reaction takes place that causes the large molecules that are discolored to break down into smaller molecules that are lighter.

This way, your teeth become whiter without any intervention. Do you feel uncomfortable sitting in a dental chair? There's no need to worry, as our dentists pay special attention to people with dental fear.

Why get teeth whitening done at a dentist?

When it comes to teeth, it's important that we take the best possible care of them. So if you want to have teeth whitening done, it's always a good idea to consult with a dentist.

First and foremost because it's important to check that your teeth are healthy before any whitening treatment.

When you come to us for treatment, we ensure that the process is tailored to your desire for a brighter smile and does not cause any damage to your teeth. In addition, our teeth whitening complies with the Danish Health Authority's requirements for dental care, which is your guarantee for a healthy result.

We all only have one set of teeth, so it's important that we give them the best conditions. We also offer treatment for toothache, broken teeth and cosmetic dental treatments, among other things.

Are there side effects of teeth whitening?

In general, whitening your teeth does not harm them. However, whitening does wear down the enamel a little bit, which is why we don't recommend that you whiten your teeth too often.

In addition, there may be side effects of the treatment. One of the most common side effects is sensitivity to hot and cold foods and drinks. However, this is only temporary and will only last a few days after treatment. In some cases, patients experience irritated gums, but as with hypersensitivity, this side effect is also temporary.

How long does teeth whitening last?

The durability of bleaching varies depending on your habits and lifestyle - discoloring beverages and foods and smoking, for example, leave their mark. So the chances of a longer-lasting result are greater if you reduce your intake of discoloring foods and drinks.

To ensure optimal results, it is important to keep the following in mind when using a bleaching tray:

  • Plastic fillings whiten differently than teeth do.
  • So if you have fillings, you may want to consider replacing them to achieve a consistent look.
  • Avoid consuming discoloring food and drinks 48 hours after treatment.
  • This is because the treatment makes the teeth a lot more susceptible to staining than normal for the first while.
  • Patients with dental diseases such as periodontal disease and caries will not be suitable for treatment.

How does teeth whitening work?

1. Initial consultation

During the initial consultation, we will examine your teeth thoroughly and assess whether at-home teeth whitening is the right treatment for you. Not all teeth are whitened in the same way, so it's important to set expectations.

2. Manufacture of custom bleaching splints

Once we have ensured that your teeth are suitable for whitening, we will take an impression of your teeth. That way, we can make a custom-made tray for you to use at home with the whitening agent we give you instructions on how to use.

The mouthguard is made of transparent acrylic and closes around your teeth so you don't get bleach on your gums.

3. Home treatment

At home, you should apply the tray with the whitening agent placed in it. How and for how long is all something we will instruct you on at the first consultation.

The procedure needs to be repeated a few times as the concentration of the hydrogen peroxide is not very high. This ensures that the whitening of your teeth is gradual - and that you get the result you dream of. However, you will most likely already see a change after 2-4 days.
