Do pacifiers damage children's teeth?

A pacifier can be a huge help for parents when their child is inconsolable or needs to sleep. That's why most children in Denmark use a pacifier. However, parents need to be aware of the consequences it can have on their child's teeth and bite later on. Using a pacifier can contribute to malocclusion, overbite and what is known as "sucking bite".

At the same time, the jaws can also be damaged and speech defects and tongue habits can develop, which can be very difficult to get rid of.

When does the pacifier hurt?

  • If it is in use for too many hours daily.
  • If the sucking is too forceful.
  • If the pacifier is used for too many years.

As a parent, it is therefore important that you are aware of the above factors. It can have major consequences if pacifier use is not restricted. It can therefore be a good idea to reduce pacifier use during the day and possibly take the pacifier out of the mouth when the child is sleeping. This will also make it easier for you to wean your child off the pacifier. Your child won't wake up every time the pacifier is dropped in their sleep.

However, don't worry if your child stops using a pacifier before the age of 3 at the latest. Most misaligned teeth will correct themselves. However, teeth may need to be adjusted at a later stage.

Is the thumb better than the pacifier?

Some children use the thumb as a substitute for the pacifier. This is because it provides reassurance in the same way that the pacifier does. This doesn't mean that as soon as the baby lets go of the pacifier, he/she will start using the thumb instead. However, the pacifier is easier to get rid of, so if it's a choice between pacifier or thumb, the pacifier will be better for the baby.
