Pain in the teeth

Are you experiencing soreness, pain or pain in your teeth? You should always take it seriously. It's your body telling you that something is not right. If you are experiencing a toothache or toothache, it should be checked as soon as possible to assess where the pain is coming from and what the next steps should be.

If the pain is severe and you need urgent attention, we also act as an emergency dentist.

Does your teeth hurt? What causes it?

What causes toothache?

Toothache can be caused by many different factors. It is often difficult for us to give a concrete assessment of why you have toothache before we have seen you. However, it is often caused by one of the following factors:

If you have a toothache, you should contact us as soon as possible so we can take a look at it.

How do you treat toothache?

Your treatment for toothache depends on what our assessment is. If you have pain before your appointment with us, you can try to cover your pain with over-the-counter medication. Always remember to follow the instructions on the packaging.

You can also rinse your mouth with chlorhexidine 0.1% and brush thoroughly in the area of greatest pain. If you're still experiencing toothache or tooth pain, you can follow these tips for toothache relief:

  • Cleanse your mouth with warm water
  • Remove food debris between teeth with dental floss
  • Use ice to reduce swelling - not hot water bottles or anything else.

What can you eat when your teeth hurt?

After treatment, you may find it difficult to eat. Your teeth are sore and have difficulty chewing. We therefore recommend that you eat soft foods. This could be the following foods, for example:

  • Mashed potatoes
  • Soup
  • Yoghurt
  • Skyr.

Once your teeth are no longer sore, you can start eating what you normally do.

Can you prevent toothache?

In the future, you can avoid serious dental problems with regular dental care. Among other things, you can do the following:

  • Brush and floss often. Refined sugars and starches burrow through the enamel with the help of various bacteria. You should therefore watch what you eat.
  • Regular toothbrushing can prevent toothache. We advise that you brush your teeth after eating food. Also, use a soft toothbrush with flour toothpaste to remove food debris.
  • Prevent tooth decay with fluoride and xylitol. Flour is effective in preventing tooth decay, but xylitol neutralizes the bacteria.
  • Have your teeth cleaned by a dentist or dental hygienist at least twice a year - which we also recommend. This is effective in preventing both cavities and gum disease.
  • If you play sports, it's a good idea to wear a mouthguard or headgear as this can prevent tooth damage.

With these tips, you can prevent future tooth pain yourself. If you need a dental cleaning or other treatment, you can always book an appointment with us.
