Implants

If you lack teeth, they can be replaced by implant treatment. Thus implants are an alternative to dentures and bridges.

What is a dental implant?

Dental implants

Unlike dentures, implants are anchored in your mouth when you talk, eat, sleep, smile and are to be treated like natural teeth. The resemblance to natural teeth is extremely accurate in terms of both function and appearance.

As is the case with natural teeth implants are long lasting, if you consult your dentist on a regular basis and make sure to keep good oral hygiene.

Dental implants are a good solution for people who are missing one or more teeth and do not want to have the adjacent teeth reduced for a bridge attachment.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is an artificial screw-shaped tooth root replacement which is surgically attached to the jawbone. An artificial tooth crown can then be attached to the implant.

Dental implants are usually manufactured from the light and relatively soft metal, titanium.

  • Titanium is a chemical element, with several advantages for use in the oral cavity:
  • Titanium will not rust.
  • Titanium can be successfully fused into bone.

Firstly this means that a structural and functional connection between the living bone and the implant is formed thereby firmly anchoring the implant into the jawbone.

Secondly, the soft tissue surrounding the implant, such as gums and connective tissue become accustomed to the new foreign body without allergic reactions.

Dental implants consisting of titanium have been in use for more than 30 years.

How can an implant replace natural teeth?

The numbers of teeth you want to replace with implants determine the line of procedure.

If one tooth is missing, an implant can be surgically placed; thence a tooth crown can be attached to the implant.

If more or all teeth in an arch are missing, implants can serve as support for a fixed partial dental bridge or a fixed full dental bridge.

In this situation, tooth crowns are joined to each other and as a consequence more tooth crowns can be attached to the same implant.

In all the above mentioned cases, all implants are fixed and can only be removed by a dentist.

Implants can hold prosthesis in place. Dental implants can also be used in connection with prosthetics

Difficulty fitting a full denture properly can be alleviated by providing the existing prosthesis with “locks” and placing 2 implants, thereby gaining increased stability.

The denture can be removed as needed, e.g. when it needs to be cleaned.

Treatment procedure:

From being a relatively difficult and lengthy procedure implant treatment today is a highly recognized and widely used treatment in dental clinics.

Methods of treatment have been simplified, while safety has been increased.

Implant treatment is highly individual. Therefore treatment procedure varies from person to person. Among other things, the treatment depends on the quality and quantity of the bone in the place where the implant is to be fused with the bone.

Your dentist can inform you of the options available to you and should always provide a detailed description of your particular treatment procedure, should you choose implant surgery.

The implant system:

At the clinic we use the Astra Tech implant system. Astra Tech is one of the best and most reliable implant systems available on the market. The system can be used for all types of implant treatments and is especially good for those treatments where it is needed for bone rebuilding. The Superastructure of the Astra Tech implants is comparable to that of other implant systems. It consists of a structure and a crown / bridge. These are often produced by dental technicians who have specialized in implant fabrication.

DENTAL IMPLANTS

Replacement of lost teeth with implants is an known treatment option.

Young and old can take advantage of the implant treatment. Treatment can be time consuming, but it involves not turn the other teeth in the mouth.
